New Azerbaijan Postage Stamps 2017. 4th Islamic GamesThe booklet of these gorgeous stamps featuring different sports was issued to commemorate the 4th Islamic Games held in Baku in May 2017.

The graphic design of stamps consists of different geometrical elements and has references to one of the traditional Islamic art – rug weaving. The icons of 4 sport disciplines stand for Tennis, Karate, Boxing and Football. 

The icons repeat cave painting style originating from Gobustan cave, Azerbaijan (See Gobustan National Park article). The 2017 Islamic Games in Azerbaijan hosted 56 countries and 20 sports were presented during the Games featuring 2 non-Olympics sport such as: Zurkhaneh and Wushu. The hosting country - Azerbaijan won the first place with 75 golden medals leaving Turkey at the second place (71 golden medals) and Iran at the third place (39 golden medals).

The Khojaly Massacre, also known as the Khojaly tragedy, was the killing of at least 161 ethnic Azerbaijani civilians from the town of Khojaly on 25–26 February 1992 by the Armenian and, partially, by CIS armed forces during the Nagorno-Karabakh War. According to the Azerbaijani side, as well as Memorial Human Rights Center, Human Rights Watch and other international observers, the massacre was committed by the ethnic Armenian armed forces, reportedly with help of some military personnel of the 366th CIS regiment, apparently not acting on orders from the command.
